How to Get Your Husband’s Support Starting a Blog
“I want to start a blog but my husband is completely unsupportive. He doesn’t think it’s worth the time and money to get it started. What can I do to change his mind?” – Katie S. asked me this question the other day and I had to share the response I sent her.
Many husbands (and friends and family) see blogging as something stupid that bored housewives do to bash each other and complain about their husbands. It’s not like that at all!
What’s the first thing you do when you’re looking to solve a problem or get an idea for a party? You go to either Google or Pinterest and you find what you’re looking for. And where does that information come from? From someone behind a computer screen writing about it. If you’ve ever Googled something, chances are that a blogger answered your question.
Still, there are many husbands who just don’t support their wives in their blogging dreams. If you’re nodding your head, I’ve got some answers to your questions and about your husband’s concerns.

But first… About me…
I’m a full-time blogger. Less than 10 months ago, I thought that it was a joke to be a “full-time blogger.” My tune changed big time when I started trying to make a profit from my blog in February, and it’s been a wild ride ever since!Â
If you only remember one thing about me, it’s that I’m not special. Not even close. I’m so average. I’m not a millionaire (far from it!). I don’t have the time to spend 24 hours a day working on my blog. I don’t have an English or journalism degree. And I’m definitely not a grammar pro (thanks to a free app called Grammarly, I don’t have to worry about looking like an idiot when I post things!).
I do love to write and I love to help people. And I’m really good at cutting out spending and finding new ways to save money. Through my blog, I have a way to help people find answers to their questions about how to save money, live on a budget, and get in control of their finances.
By writing about what I love, I’m able to provide my family with a second income that we never thought we’d have, as well as getting to stay at home with my children.
Here’s where you can get your husband on board.
If your husband is very anti-blogging, there are some things that he might not know about that could help to change his mind.
It’s not expensive to start!
Blogging is a super cheap (almost free!) hobby that makes you money! Starting your own blog isn’t very expensive! Starting a blog that makes you money while working from home starts at about $3.95/month!
First off, I’m a cheapskate. I’d never tell you to buy something that you can’t afford. But for $3.95/ month, and basically unlimited income potential, starting a blog is a sound investment.
It’s not expensive to maintain!
Getting a Gmail for your blog is free, so is getting a Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.  All of the things that you need to promote your blog from the beginning are free.
You can get great themes and designs for your blog for free from WordPress. And if you’re not a fan of those themes, you can get some for $20 on CreativeMarket and Etsy. You don’t need to spend a fortune to customize your blog and make it look great.
Now that we’ve talked about the cost (or lack thereof), let’s talk about the income!
You can start your blog for as low as $3.95 a month, and spend nothing more for your blog. You really can! But, here’s my favorite part: the ROI (Return On Investment).
If your husband is business minded he’s thinking that blogging has a negative return on investment; that all it will do is distract you from your work at home, it will cost the family money, and will provide nothing in return.
That’s not the case at all. Not only will you be able to make your money back in the first year, but you might very well be bringing in a part-time income (or more!) from home.
If you think you’ll still have trouble convincing him that you can make a full-time income blogging…
Show him these bloggers and their CRAZY income reports!
Rosemarie from The Busy Budgeter: $40,000 in February
Lindsay from Pinch of Yum: $32,971 in June
Sarah from SarahTitus.com: $10,000/ month (in her first year!)
Michelle from Making Sense of Cents: $72,196 in March
It’s worth mentioning (for your sake, not to any naysayers) that this kind of money doesn’t come in overnight. It doesn’t just start out like these income reports.
You could be the exception to the rule, but I don’t want you to get started blogging and think you’re a failure for not making at least $1,500 in your first month.
Here are some equally-amazing bloggers and their less-crazy-and-more-attainable income reports:
Christina from Embracing Simple: $1,488 in October
Lauren from L Bee and the Money Tree:Â $2,300 per month
Kori from Kori at Home: $1,251 in February
Choncé from My Debt Epiphany: $2,703 in January
Kristin from Believe in a Budget: $3,700 in February
Gretchen of Retired by 40: $2,664 in September
Shameless plug: my first “income report” was for my first AdSense check of $148, followed by $1,000 the very next month! And growing!! Starting off takes time, but once you get going, it’s crazy!
Blogging is really a long-term game: the longer you blog, the more money you will make, easier. Work hard and smart from the beginning and by the time you’re 6 months in, the “hard work” will seem less hard, and more natural. Soon enough, you’ll be working 10-20 hour weeks and making even more money than you were working full-time.
I’ve made a freebie that will help you work smarter to get where you want to go faster in blogging:
Here’s the pitch that you need to remember for your husband, mother, or any other nay-sayer in your life:
“I can do this for next to no money, while helping people, while doing something that I like, while staying at home, and have a fantastic return on investment within the first year that could continue to increase as I grow.”
What other job can you work part time, stay at home, make your own hours, be your own boss, and start with $3.95 a month… and bring home $1,000 a month? (I’m sure that there are some out there.)
Blogging has opened up a whole new world of possibilities for me and for my whole family. I’m making a part-time (and growing!) income before my kids even wake up.
I don’t have to leave early in the day, I don’t have to pay for a sitter or for daycare, I don’t have to worry about getting to work on time if my son has a cold… There are very few jobs that can do all of that, but blogging is definitely number one on my list!
What do you do to get your husband to support your entrepreneurial dreams?
